Espresso

Most recommended

Breville Bambino Plus + Turin DF54

The one we’d point most beginners to, especially if you drink lattes and cappuccinos.

Breville Bambino Plus
Turin DF54

Machine. It heats up in seconds and has PID temperature control, and the automatic steam wand means you can make good milk drinks before you’ve learned to steam.

Grinder. An electric single-doser with 54 mm flat burrs, for about what a good hand grinder costs. Lance Hedrick and James Hoffmann both reviewed it well.

Before you buy. You weigh out beans for every shot, and quality control on DF grinders is hit and miss, so buy from a store with easy returns. Tighter budget: the Breville Bambino ($299) with a Kingrinder K6 hand grinder.

Project build

Gaggia Classic Pro + Turin DF54

If you want to learn espresso hands-on and keep upgrading the machine for years.

Gaggia Classic Pro E24
Turin DF54

Machine. Its 58 mm commercial portafilter takes any standard basket or tamper. Hedrick rates it B as it comes and A+ with the GaggiMate kit, which adds PID, pressure control and profiling.

Grinder. Same DF54 as the Bambino Plus build. If you want bigger burrs, the DF64 is the next step up.

Before you buy. The total is just the machine and grinder. GaggiMate sells its kits direct in euros, so check yours fits your model year before ordering. Rather not mod? The Lelit Anna PID ($599.95) has PID out of the box.

Dual boiler

Lelit Elizabeth + Timemore Sculptor 078S

For anyone making milk drinks every day who wants to brew and steam at the same time.

Lelit Elizabeth V3
Timemore Sculptor 078S

Machine. A compact dual boiler with PID and programmable pre-infusion. It’s the only dual boiler Hedrick gives an A.

Grinder. 78 mm flat burrs that handle both espresso and filter. Home-Barista members rate it as very good value.

Before you buy. Lelit has released the Elizabeth3 in Europe, so check which version the store is actually selling. On a good sale, the Breville Dual Boiler ($1,499.95) is close behind (Hedrick rates it B).

Endgame

La Marzocco Linea Micra + Mazzer Philos

For buying once and being done with it. Café-grade build and steam power, best suited to medium roasts and milk drinks.

La Marzocco Linea Micra
Mazzer Philos

Machine. One owner who moved over from a Decent DE1 found the shots richer with medium and dark roasts, and the steaming about twice as fast.

Grinder. A 64 mm flat-burr single-doser, and the only one in its class we’ve found in Canadian stores.

Before you buy. If you mostly drink light roasts or want to profile shots, people who’ve owned both still prefer the Decent.

Brewed coffee

Lowest cost

AeroPress + Timemore C3

A good first manual brewer. It makes a nice cup without much technique.

AeroPress Original Coffee Maker
Timemore Chestnut C3
  • AeroPress Original Coffee Maker$39.95 at AeroPress
  • Timemore Chestnut C3$79 at Timemore

Brewer. It’s forgiving and you don’t need a gooseneck kettle. Commenters on Home-Barista say the V60 is harder to start with.

Grinder. CNN Underscored picked it as the best manual grinder.

Before you buy. Grinding by hand takes a minute or so per cup.

Hario V60 + 1Zpresso K-Ultra

For brewing pour-over every day and dialling in light roasts.

Hario V60 Plastic Coffee Dripper 02
1Zpresso K-Ultra
  • Hario V60 Plastic Coffee Dripper 02$13 at Hario
  • 1Zpresso K-Ultra$259 at 1Zpresso

Brewer. The pour-over cone most people learn on. You’ll want a gooseneck kettle and a scale to get consistent cups.

Grinder. 1Zpresso’s best hand grinder. Hedrick rates it A, and it keeps up with electric grinders that cost more.

Before you buy. A V60 rewards a steady pour. If that sounds fiddly, the Hario Switch can steep before it drains and is more forgiving. Rather not hand grind? The Fellow Ode Brew Grinder Gen 2 ($399.95) is electric; Hedrick rates it B.

Endgame

Hario Switch + Timemore Sculptor 078

For people who mostly drink light roasts and want the clearest cup without hand grinding.

Hario V60 Switch Ceramic Dripper 02
Timemore Sculptor 078

Brewer. You get the clarity of pour-over with some of the forgiveness of steeping.

Grinder. An electric grinder with 78 mm flat burrs made for filter. Home-Barista members, going by Hedrick’s take, prefer it to the DF83 for filter.

Before you buy. The 078 (filter burrs) and 078S (espresso burrs) are different grinders, so make sure you buy the 078. Canadian stock comes and goes. For a fraction of the price, the Comandante C40 MK4 Nitro Blade ($319) hand grinder.
